Estimate Detail

Posted By Dave Garman, Monday, June 11, 2018

As an estimator, I often get asked the same two following questions.

  1. How fast can you provide me with an estimate?
  2. How detailed of an estimate can you produce?

The standard response I have developed over many years of estimating is, “The speed and detail level of my estimate is a reflection of the information you provide me to do my estimate.”

The more information and details that are provided, the more detailed an estimate can be produced which also reflects the amount of time it takes to produce an estimate.

I also ask if they want a budget estimate or a GMP estimate.

Obviously, a budget estimate allows you to revise your estimate when additional information is provided.

Whereas a GMP estimate locks you into a guaranteed maximum price.

The overall size and complexity of the project also reflects the amount of time it will take to produce an estimate.
